3. Using headings effectively

Headers create a table of contents for your webpage. A heading one (h1) tag acts as the title for the page, heading 2 (h2) creates an overarching outline of the document, and the additional levels (h3, h4, h5, h6) create further structure within the main sections.

🤔

For consideration

For screen reader users, navigating using headings acts as a quick scan of a page allowing the user to hear all the heading 2 tags, giving them a good overview of the page topics.

🪄

Putting it into action

  • Use one h1 tag per page. It acts as a top-level, unique title for the page
  • Use headings in sequential order (h1, h2, h3, h4)
  • Don’t skip heading levels (i.e., jumping from h2 to h4)
